Hamilton Eyes Up Rosberg As Formula One Title Race Hots Up
1995 British Grand Prix winner, Johnny Herbert, is looking forward to a thrilling climax to this year’s Formula 1 season. With just six races remaining it is going to be a straight fight for the Driver’s Championship between the two Mercedes-Benz drivers, Britain’s Lewis Hamilton and the German Nico Rosberg. However, at present there is a little friction between the pair and, with just 22 points separating them, it would be a brave man who called the outcome.
Following their contact at the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps on 24th August, a clash which caused race-ending damage to Hamilton’s car and saw Rosberg widely blamed, there was tension at Mercedes team HQ in Brackley, Northants. As a result there was enormous interest in last weekend’s race at Monza with motorsport fans eager to see how the two would respond.
After a terrible start dropped him from pole to fourth at the first corner, Hamilton had to chase down Rosberg but was able to slowly turn the screw on the German. The pressure on Rosberg eventually told when he made a mistake under braking and Hamilton took full advantage to take the victory. Fans and pundits alike are now questioning Rosberg’s mental strength and Hamilton would appear to have the momentum but there is still a long way to go.
Johnny’s next stop with Sky is Singapore over the weekend of 19-21st October and then he accompanies them to Japan before helping them cover the inaugural Russian Grand Prix at Sochi, scene of this year’s Winter Olympics, on October 12th. The season concludes on 23rd November at the Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi and the destiny of the driver’s title will be decided. Hamilton or Rosberg, it will be one of the two.
Johnny has established himself as a key member of the Sky F1 HD channel’s team since joining the broadcaster in 2012. He adds to their coverage with not only his expert analysis but also his winning personality. He has proven himself a hit with audiences and, even as a pundit, continues to be one of the most popular characters on the F1 circuit.
